My Journey, by Foote

(I know, I know, the journey looks like its by van. But it’s clever and I had to use it.)

Professional Journey

In 2020, I made the decision to leave early childhood education behind and pursue a career that was better suited for me. The catch? I didn’t know what career that was. I researched careers and came across UX design.

I felt the twinge of excitement in my stomach. I could combine my interest in psychology and creativity for a job?! Amazing! Now, how do I get there? My background was nowhere near tech or design.

Bootcamps were increasing in popularity at the time. Many were similar, except for Springboard, which offered 1:1 mentorship and access to career services and coaching. I felt like I had nothing to lose, so I took the plunge and invested in myself.

Many ups and downs and 11 months later, I finished the course and entered into the job search phase. I quickly realized that my work was just beginning and there was still so much to learn. Yes, I learned the foundations of design, but not the nuances and day-to-day reality of working in a company.

I felt at a disadvantage. Months went by and I struggled to find anything. I was slowly losing hope. Did I make the right choice changing careers? Am I even meant to do this? At the 6-month mark, I finally found a position and the beginning of my UX design career.

For 18 months I worked on the Dell Design System. I learned about the purpose and usage of components and patterns, best practices and accessibility, communication and evangelism, and keeping our users at the center of it all.

With a solid foundation built, I took on my next challenge as a product designer at Springboard in 2023. It was a full circle moment for me, and I was passionate about using my craft to make the learning experience easier and more valuable to students who were doing what I once did: investing in their future. I contributed to the beginnings of the Springboard design system and worked with stakeholders to solve business and student problems with quality and speed.

Unfortunately, my time at Springboard came to an end mid January of 2024. I am now searching for my next adventure where I can continue to cultivate my skills while diving into my curiosity and creativity.

Personal Journey

Did I go to Italy for the cats? Maybe…

Just kidding. I went because I wanted to see Europe, explore with friends, and enjoy delicious food (and also the cats). To say it was one of the best experiences of my life is an understatement.

✨ I enjoy new experiences and connecting deeply with others.

✨ I love to make things with my hands.

  • I’ve learned how to embroider and eventually want to learn to sew clothing.

  • Making jewelry is a fun way to be creative and self expressive.

  • Painting objects, like pottery or wood, is my favorite. One day I want to explore working with clay.

✨ I very much adore my animals

  • Two dogs

  • Three cats

  • Never a dull moment
